Coleus - Freckles
Poorly drained soils and excessive watering will damage coleus. Frost will cause them to die immediately. The brilliant colors explode in sunny locations. The Coleus Freckles, 'Coleus hybrid', has creamy yellow foliage with bronze and orange splotches. Coleus plants are so colorful that many people keep them and use them as a house plant. The coleus plants are a tender perennials. Flower buds should be pinched off as soon as they develop. These plants will do best in temperatures above 55 degrees. For zones 10-11, this plant can also be a perennial. Coleus plants are durable and easy to grow. These new, bigger, sun loving varieties have revolutionized contanier gardening. Plants suffering from "wet feet" will be stunted, leaves will turn a muddy brown, and leaf margins will be scorched. Coleus must have good soil drainage. Licorice - Lemon It's especially useful in mixed containers as it tends to grow outward which makes a planter or basket look larger. Licorice do best in a well drained soil, either in beds or containers. The Licorice, Lemon Licorice, 'Helichrysum petiolare', is a pale lime plant that lets you do a little to get a lot. For zones 9-11, this plant can also be a perennial. Lemon Licorice produces small white flowers that are insignificant and can be removed. The Lemon Licorice is restrained grower with velvety soft foliage. This plant is an excellent choice for hanging baskets or mixed containers. |
